President's Message December 2009

The season for being happy

There is no shortage of problems, issues, circumstances, situations, or events that cause each of us varying degrees of anxiety about our families, our friends, and our respective careers. The threat of nuclear war, the possible collapse of Western Civilization, the fear of another 9/11 tragedy, the potential of the government turning our nation into a nanny state, the changes being forced on our culture, the continual loss of liberties, the possibility of an economic catastrophe, and the question of what is going to happen to us all conspire to suck the air right out of our lungs!

However … as we enter the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year season, we again have the annual opportunity to set aside the fears and anxieties surrounding us and focus on the things that are of ultimate and eternal importance. In fact, that we have the liberty to freely celebrate this season is incredibly significant in the history of civilizations.

We should never forget the privileges that characterize us as a people written over two centuries ago by fifty-six men who sacrificed everything, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” And also of equal importance are the many heroes who have freely taken the ultimate journey into eternity so that we may continue to enjoy these liberties.

Over the last ten years, I have been profoundly comforted by the knowledge that the vast majority of people I have met in the course of my professional career and my CSI experiences have a deep belief in the God of the Bible. While it may be politically incorrect (which I believe is actually a movement to alter our culture in a sinister way) not to express our beliefs or acknowledge publicly the God and Savior that so many of us believe in, we are still a society where rule is by the silent majority instead of a so-called “offended” individual. For those reading this message who consider this time a holiday instead of Christmas, you have the right to do just that, however, please respect the same right of those who do believe in the real reason for the season – Jesus Christ.

It is fitting that the season ends one year so that a new year can begin. We seem to all be resolute in the hope that the coming year will be a “good year” for our families, our friends, and ourselves. While it is always difficult to let the past be the past, the inclination to be hopeful about the future is irresistible and is crucial to our temporal journey through this life. It never ceases to be amazing that the human capacity of hope for a better tomorrow keeps us going year after year until our final journey.

May you and yours have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and may God continue to bless us. May we make 2010 the best year yet
