Is it safe to go back into the ocean yet?
Remember how you felt during and after seeing the movie Jaws? Remember your feelings of anxiety, dread, and fear, as the theme music emotionally anticipated yet another upcoming attack on someone in the wrong place at the wrong time? Remember how, even though you were sitting in a theater with hundreds of other terrified souls far, far from the ocean, you wanted to be anywhere but watching that movie? Remember how you resolved you were never ever going into the ocean again?

Now, let’s make a couple of comparisons. The wet ocean is like the ocean of people in the design and construction world today, and the shark is like the economy. If we think about it for a minute or two, the emotions we had during the movie are not unlike the emotions we have been going through over the last several years. Just like in the movie, at first we thought we were safe and secure in the boat, but the shark started taking the boat apart in a very dramatic way and our safety and security faded into the salty air. Then the anxiety, dread, and fear exploded when we discovered we were going to need a bigger boat and like it or not we were going into the water with the monster!

Many of us have felt those same anxious, dreadful, and fearful feelings at some point in the last two years. We have all watched helplessly as far too many of us became victims. Also, too many of us have been on a boat that was torn apart by a monster, and there was nothing we could do to keep from being in the ocean. It’s been too long since we have felt dry, safe, and secure.

So, is it safe to go back into the ocean yet? While we may or may not have gotten over our feelings about the wet ocean, the time has come that we should start getting over our feelings of being victims. Our fear of economic calamity has to pass. We have to start believing we are going to survive. We have to start believing our design and construction world is going to get better and that it will soon be safe to go back into the ocean again.
